2018: YEAR IN REVIEW

We saw many newsworthy events in our community, nation, and world in 2018! The Winter Olympics, May 4th windstorm, Doug Ford, our new office… here’s a look back at some of the milestones from this past year.

After some reflection, we hope you take a deep breath and smile. We believe 2019 is going to be great!

January 1Shelley Sutton celebrated 25 years as Manager of Dumfries Mutual Insurance Company. She started here on January 1, 1993.

February 9 – The 2018 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XXIII Olympic Winter Games, began in Pyeongchang, South Korea. The games ran until February 25.

March 5Jeremy Webster, Property Underwriter since 2013, received his hard-earned Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) designation.

March 19 – Another great year was reflected upon at our 162nd Annual General Meeting in Cambridge.

April 5 – Rockton Agricultural Society began their 41st Annual Dinner Theatre. It would sell out with 1,900 attendees over six nights.

May 4 – A windstorm struck our province that the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) would call the largest insured event in Ontario in five years.

May 15 – We introduced an online quoting system on our website, and the ability for clients to make payments via online banking.

May 19 – The wedding of Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle took place at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle.

May 28 – The Cambridge pedestrian bridge over the Grand River opened for walkers and cyclists.

June 5We rode the Big Bike for Heart & Stroke and raised $2,626 for medical research.

June 7 – Doug Ford and his PC Party of Ontario won a majority provincial government with 76 of the 124 seats in the legislature. The same day, the Washington Capitals defeated the Vegas Golden Knights to win the Stanley Cup for their first time.

June 14 – The 21st FIFA World Cup began in Russia, and ran until July 15 when Team France would be victorious.

July 10 – We presented the Ontario Christian Gleaners with $18,695 that was raised through our 6th Annual Charity Golf Tournament in June.

July 17 – We donated the installation of a digital scoreboard with wireless controls at Sheffield Ball Park.

August 20 – We officially opened at our new office at 1310 Old Hwy 8, Sheffield, after 35 years at 12 Cambridge Street, Cambridge.

September 16Cheryl Duncan, Property Underwriter, celebrated working 25 years at Dumfries Mutual.

October 15 – The 110th Waterloo/North Dumfries Plowing Match was held at the Ballantyne farm located north of Ayr.

October 17 – The Canadian Federal Government legalized cannabis for recreational use across Canada.

October 22 – Kathryn McGarry became Mayor of Cambridge this Ontario municipal elections day, following Doug Craig who had served 18 years.

November 7 – We were thrilled to be voted “Favourite Insurance Company” in the Cambridge Times “Readers Choice Awards”.

December 31 – The Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Raptors are both in second place in their divisions, after excellent starts to their 2018/2019 seasons.
