2017: YEAR IN REVIEW

In 2017, we saw many newsworthy events in our world, nation, and community! Donald Trump, Canada 150, Dumfries Mutual’s groundbreaking… here’s a glance at some of the milestones that marked this past year.

Enjoy taking a look back, then take a breath and smile. We have a feeling 2018 is going to be a great one!

  • January 20: Donald Trump began his term as president of the United States.
  • February 26: Viola Davis became the first black actor or actress to win an Oscar, Emmy, and Tony award.
  • March 13: Canadian marathon runner Ed Whitlock died at age 86. He was the first person over 70 to run a marathon in under three hours.
  • March 22: We reflected upon another strong and successful year at our Annual General Meeting.
  • March 30: Our Manager, Shelley Sutton, received the OMIA Presidential Merit Award. It is given to an individual who has demonstrated a long-term commitment to mutuality.
  • May 14: Emmanuel Macron became the youngest president in the history of France at age 39.
  • June 15: We held our 5th Annual Charity Golf Tournament, raising $19,565 for the Cambridge Shelter Corporation.
  • July 1: Canada celebrated its 150th birthday. Large displays of fireworks and festivities were held across our nation.
  • August 21: A total solar eclipse spanned from the Pacific to the Atlantic coasts for the first time in 99 years.
  • August 30: Hurricane Irma developed and would cause widespread and catastrophic damage in the Caribbean and Florida Keys.
  • September 12: We proudly held a groundbreaking event at the future site of our new office in Sheffield.
  • September 17: Our agent Colleen May became Mrs. Kiriakos as she married her love, Nas. Coincidently, it was also her father-in-law’s 92nd birthday.
  • October 1: The tragic Las Vegas Strip shooting occurred, which in turn prompted compassionate support from around the world.
  • October 4: We began an Instagram account for the first time in our history and quickly gained over 50 followers.
  • October 7: Our longtime agent Glen Nixon turned 60. This was Glen’s 38th year of his career.
  • October 17: Gord Downie died at age 53. He’ll be remembered as a Canadian legend, songwriter, and lead singer of the Tragically Hip.
  • November 26: The Toronto Argonauts defeated the Calgary Stampeders 27-24 in the 105th Grey Cup.
  • November 27: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their engagement and plans to get married in the spring.
  • December 9: Toronto FC defeated Seattle Sounders 2-0 to bring the MLS Cup north of the border for the first time.
  • December 14: We gladly donated three boxes of canned goods and toys to the Cambridge Firefighter Basketfund. These items will assist Cambridge families.
  • December 19: The Toronto Maple Leafs and the NHL both turned 100.
