Six Ways to Get Home Safely Over the Holidays
With the holiday season fast approaching, it’s time for a refresher on the best ways to get home safely after a night out. Whether your holiday party is in Cambridge, Kitchener-Waterloo, Guelph, or beyond, there is always a safe way and there is never an excuse for drinking and driving.
A Planned Designated Driver
The important word here is planned, and the next important step is ensuring they stick to that plan. Getting in the car with somebody who didn’t plan on being the DD but made a spot judgement call that they are “okay to drive”, is not worth the risk. It’s also important to be sure that your planned DD sticks to their plan of not indulging. However, if they decide to have a little extra “fun”, it’s never too late to change the plan. There are tons of other ways that both of you can get home safely. Read on!
Designated Driver Services
Services like Over The Limit are great for nights where you want to drive yourself there, but need a safe and affordable way to get your car and yourself home at the end of the night. They send a team of two so that one driver can drive your car home safely.
Uber
In July of last year we welcomed Uber to the Waterloo Region. Because everything from dispatch to payment is handled through the app, it’s a convenient and safe option. If you haven’t used Uber before, ask a friend that has it to refer you through the app. You’ll both enjoy a free ride up to $10 for spreading the word.
RideCo
If you’re in Kitchener-Waterloo and don’t mind sharing, the newest local ride-sharing service, RideCo might be for you. They advertise prices up to half of what you’d pay for a taxi or Uber, and you can schedule rides in advance.
Taxi
A taxi may be the traditional way to get home safely, but there’s nothing traditional about their new setups. Many taxi companies are stepping up their technology game and launching apps to compete in the Uber world. Check out the App Store or Play Store to see if your favourite local taxi company has one.
Transit
With Grand River Transit covering over 12 million kilometres in Cambridge, Kitchener, and Waterloo, one of their routes may be convenient for you. They even offer free rides on New Year’s Eve starting at 6pm!
Get home safely everyone!
